Time to upgrade – Server 2012 R2 End-of-Life

Windows Server 2012R2 has been a staple for infrastructure for many years. It has proven itself time and time again for being a reliable and robust operating system that just simply worked.

Server 2012R2 was a BIG step up from its predecessors Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012. In terms of additional features there wasn’t huge differences, however reliability was the huge improvement that every IT person loved.

Sadly, every good thing must come to an end. On October 10 2023 Server 2012 R2 will become end of life and not receive security patches or updates.

What impact does this have for your business?

Well quite a lot to be frank.
If you are still running Server 2012 R2 in your organisation after 10/10/2023 you will be at a significantly higher risk of exposing your network to security vulnerabilities and threats of cyber-attack.

The good news is you still have time to upgrade your servers to later versions aka Windows Server 2016 / 2019 / 2022.
By updating ahead of time, you will ensure your servers are receiving security patches from Microsoft (helping to minimise potential risks) and you will also enjoy some of the newer features of later operating systems.

Plan Plan Plan!

As with any Server upgrades it is imperative to plan out when and how you will update your servers.
Prior to any Server operating system upgrade you should always:

  • Check that any server applications are compatible with newer versions of Windows.
  • Check that you have a functioning & tested backup.
  • Checked that your Server Hardware will support the latest version of Windows.
  • Plan the most appropriate time for these upgrades and advise users of downtime.
  • Have a contingency strategy should you run into problems.

Don’t wait till it’s too late.
